Three sisters -Anton Tschechow

Irina, Masha, and Olga—the three sisters—moved from Moscow to a provincial town eleven years ago, where their father had taken command of a regiment. Now, on the anniversary of his death, they look back with deep melancholy.
Their everyday life in the small town feels dull and devoid of meaning. There is only one thing they truly desire: to return to Moscow. Olga works herself to exhaustion as a school principal. Masha, trapped in a tedious marriage to the teacher Kulygin, throws herself into a disastrous love affair with the newly arrived officer Vershinin. Irina dreams of a fulfilling career. Half-heartedly, she becomes engaged to Baron Tusenbach in hopes of leaving the town with him—but he is killed in a senseless duel the day before the wedding.
Andrei, the sisters’ brother, introduces social tension into the household through his marriage to Natasha. Having lost both ambition and direction, he retreats into playing the violin and gradually falls into a gambling addiction.
Premiered in 1901, Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov portrays longing as a burning, excessive force within a state of stagnation.
