THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN
Schauspiel Wuppertal
Actually, he only wanted to stay three weeks, but in the end it becomes seven years: Hans Castorp, who visits his cousin in the sanatorium in Switzerland, increasingly gets caught up in the special atmosphere of this place in the mountains. He extends his stay again and again. The daily life of the tuberculosis patients in Davos follows its own rhythm and seems to be removed from the world. The sick have no plans, time passes differently here than in the lowlands, and philosophical conversations and amorous entanglements develop in the face of transience and death.
Thomas Mann’s 1924 novel describes a world parallel to social reality. The story takes place shortly before the First World War.
The team around director Henri Hüster is interested in the perception of time, which comes close to our feeling during the current pandemic. Standstill, isolation, uneventfulness, but also the return of certain rituals are characteristic of it. The Inclusive Acting Studio and the acting ensemble become a narrative body.
