Endzeit der blutigen Rosenkriege. Richard Gloster hat es nicht nötig, seine skrupellosen politischen Mittel wie Verleumdung und Mord zu verbergen, solange er ihnen hehre Zwecke andichtet. In großen und gewagten Spielzügen rückt er auf sein Ziel vor, in der Nachfolge des todkranken Königs Edward den Thron zu besteigen und alle potenziellen Konkurrenten auszuschalten. So lässt er den eigenen Bruder Clarence ermorden, verführt Lady Anne, deren Vater und Gatten er auf dem Gewissen hat, und schreckt auch nicht davor zurück, die legitimen kindlichen Thronerben in den Tower zu werfen.
Richard erschafft ein System der Angst, in dem die Schleimer und Schleicher von heute die in Ungnade gefallenen Todeskandidaten von morgen sind. Wer aber die Krone trägt, das wird Richard schmerzhaft bewusst, den verfolgen erst recht Paranoia, wüste Prophezeiungen und Albtraumnächte.
Der neue Hoffnungsträger Richmond sammelt indes schon die Truppen gegen einen immer isolierteren König Richard III.

End of the bloody Wars of the Roses. Richard Gloster has no need to hide his unscrupulous political means, such as slander and murder, as long as he serves noble ends. In great and daring moves, he advances towards his goal of succeeding the terminally ill King Edward and eliminating all potential rivals. Thus he has his own brother Clarence murdered, seduces Lady Anne, whose father and husband he has on his conscience, and does not hesitate to throw the legitimate child heirs to the throne into the Tower.
Richard creates a system of fear in which today’s sycophants and sneaks are tomorrow’s disgraced death row inmates. But those who wear the crown become painfully aware of Richard, and are haunted by paranoia, desperate prophecies and nightmare nights.
Meanwhile, Richmond, the new bearer of hope, is already gathering troops against an increasingly isolated King Richard III.

The acting director always masters the enormous mountain of Shakespearean texts with great intensity, whispering the words, spitting them out, dominating the stage with his almost tangible physicality. Finally, the music of Florentin Berger-Monit and Johannes Wernicke leaves a lasting impression. With synthesizer sound surfaces and machine rhythms it reminds us that the power politician Richard III is a thoroughly contemporary character. (Musenblätter)
